Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning Offers Tips for National Water Quality Month

Serving Brooklyn Since 1906

Leading Brooklyn plumbing company has advice for residents to have a positive impact on the Brooklyn and Manhattan-area water quality

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 4, 2017— While New York City has some of the world’s best drinking water and is one of only five large cities in the country to run a largely unfiltered drinking water supply. It is important to filter the water that enters the home to protect from contaminates found in old plumbing pipes and fixtures. Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning, Inc., a leading plumbing and heating company serving Brooklyn and Manhattan since 1906, marks National Water Quality Month with tips residents can use to ensure that the next generation of New Yorkers continues to enjoy high-quality drinking water.

To ensure the water delivered to the city is safe, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), performs more than 630,000 analyses of the city’s drinking water every year by collecting samples from streams that feed the reservoirs, the reservoirs themselves, the aqueducts that carry the water to the city, and from nearly 1,000 sampling locations throughout the five boroughs.

“New Yorkers are proud of the unique infrastructure that carries our water,” says Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning. “As the water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals, pesticides or human activities. There are a few simple things residents can do to protect their water quality.”

Petri offers residents these tips to help preserve NYC’s water quality:

  • Flush the tap – The DEP is responsible for providing high-quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. Many of the older plumbing pipes or fixtures leading to home can absorb lead and pass it through the tap water. One way to minimize the potential lead exposure is to flush the tap from 30 seconds to two minutes before using the water for drinking or cooking.
  • Be aware of what goes down the drain – and how it affects the water supply. Medications, detergents, creams, lotions and soaps all end up in the water supply. Consider switching to environmentally-friendly and non-toxic household cleaners and personal care items.
  • Discard trash and pet waste appropriately – Trash and pet waste if not disposed of properly can cause bacteria to run into storm drains and water supplies. The best practice is to tie pet waste in a recycled-plastic pet-waste bag and place it in the trash.
  • Have the water tested by a professional – If a resident is concerned about the quality of water entering their home through old pipes and possibly picking up contaminants in the delivery process, contact a professional to test the water. Once the water is tested, and the contaminants are identified, the technician can recommend the water filtration system that will work best for the home. The primary water filtration system uses charcoal to remove sediment and debris that build up in your pipes. A whole-home water purification system to remove lead, chemicals, heavy metals, chlorine and other contaminates

For Manhattan and Brooklyn residents who would like help testing their water, Petri provides complete water testing, including checks for arsenic, bacterial contaminants, hardness, iron levels, lead, nitrates and pH balance. The professionals at Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning are ready to assist and help repair or install the correct water filtration system for your home.
