New Year, New Energy-Efficient Home Comfort Systems

new year sees more energy-efficient home comfort systems

When most people make their New Year’s resolutions, they often think about how they will improve their health or reduce stress.

“Saving money” generally also tops the list of resolutions people make for the new year. But many people don’t consider how new technology or changes in their home comfort system’s performance can lower energy bills.

Some big things are happening in 2025 that will help average homeowners be more energy efficient.

Heat Pump-Powered Water Heaters

If buying a new water heater is on your list, the biggest change you’ll see is the widespread adoption of heat pump water heaters.

In 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) finalized congressionally mandated energy efficiency standards on residential water heaters. The new heat pump water heaters will more than double the efficiency of electric storage water heaters. Like their cousins in the heating industry, these water heaters store heat from the ambient air instead of using electricity to generate it.

These water heaters are more efficient than the traditional gas or electric versions, using 60–70% less energy. They can also help dehumidify the surrounding space.

Most estimates also show that they last between 13 and 15 years, which is about three to five years longer than their gas or electric counterparts.

So, if you’re in the market for a new water heater in 2025, it may be time to consider heat pump technology.

New Standards in Refrigerants

On Jan. 1, any new residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps have to be fitted to use the new refrigerants, commonly known as A2Ls. This will gradually replace the current R-410A.

This change is part of the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM) of 2020. Under AIM, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated a change to move away from refrigerants that have a high Global Warming Potential (GWP).

And these new refrigerants save homeowners money in the long run by lowering their HVAC unit’s energy consumption.

If you’ll be looking for a new HVAC system this year, it’s best to go ahead and make the change now. If you get a system that uses the older refrigerant types, you may be unable to refill it in the coming years should you have a leak.

Green Plumbing to Accelerate

While the EPA’s WaterSense Program encourages the use of eco-friendly solutions, there aren’t any mandates on the horizon. The trend toward the installation of low-flow faucets and toilets, smart leak detection systems, and the employment of green plumbing techniques continues.
