It’s the spooky season when ghosts and goblins go bump in the night.
But if you hear frightening noises coming from your walls, it might be a sign that you have a plumbing issue.
The last thing you want heading into the holiday months is a broken plumbing system. The extra pressure of guests or holiday cooking can also be a strain.
During the holiday season, we have a lot more going on in the house than during other times of the year.
At Halloween, many people carve jack-o’-lanterns for an extra-spooky decoration. If you and your family are prepared to scoop the pumpkin, be sure to throw the “guts” away in a trash can and not down the drain. And don’t flush them down the toilet, either.
Pumpkin pulp contains a lot of seeds and stringy sinew that can get caught in your plumbing system. If your pipes have some nicks or a tree root or two, pumpkin innards can get caught. This creates a buildup in your pipes, which will eventually result in a clog.
You should also be careful about throwing out candy. Most parents like to inspect their kids’ candy when they get home from trick-or-treating. If you see open, old or suspicious candy in the batch, throw those away in the trash alongside the pumpkin guts. Flushing candy, especially if it’s still in the wrapper, is a clog waiting to happen.
The holidays are also a good time to practice safe draining. If you plan to have guests over during the holidays, let them know the limits of your plumbing.
Explain to your guests what can and cannot be put down your pipes, especially if you have an older system. You don’t know what they flush down the drains in their own homes, so let them know that wet wipes, food or trash are no-nos at your house.
If you’ve lived in your home for more than 10 years or your home is more than 30 years old, you may want to have a plumbing inspection. While PVC and copper pipes do last a long time, they can still degrade. And, if your home still has galvanized pipes, it’s time to upgrade.
Whether your pipes are knocking in the walls or are slow to drain, an inspection will turn up the problem.
A typical plumbing inspection includes checking the pipes to ensure they aren’t leaking or that your system has no lead pipes. A certified plumber will also check your pipes’ insulation and will check your faucets for leaks.
