How Clean is Your Water? Three Tips to Improve it.

Serving Brooklyn Since 1906

During the dog days of summer, a nice, cool drink of water is always on tap.

And, since August is National Water Quality Month, it’s a great time to consider the quality of your home’s water.

Here are three ways to make sure you are getting the most out of your home’s faucets:

1.    Maintain Your Plumbing

If your home is more than 50 years old, you may still have galvanized steel pipes lurking in your walls. While all pipes will degrade over time, galvanized steel pipes rust and corrode. Not only will this cause leaks, it can also leach mineral deposits into your water.

But, even if you don’t have these old pipes, it’s still a good idea to make sure your faucet aerators are cleaned and that your water heater is serviced regularly.

2.    Install Water Treatment Equipment

While city water may be clean enough to drink, sometimes it’s hard or not as clean as you’d like.

If that is the case, installing a water purification or filtration system may be your next step. Hard water leaves behind mineral deposits and lime scale, which can cause your pipes to corrode more quickly. Soft water is also better on your hair and skin.

And, if you are using a water purifier or filtration system, make sure you are following a regular cleaning routine and scheduling regular maintenance with a professional.

3.    Test Your Water

If you are concerned about the quality of your home’s water, you can buy a test kit from a home improvement store and do it yourself. There are kits to test for various contaminants, so you might need to do some research before you purchase a kit.

But if you fear your water is harboring contaminants contact your local health department. They will either send someone out to test your water or will help you contact the correct agency in your location.
