How can I take care of the drains in my home?

Tips On Properly Maintaining Your Drains

Brooklyn Plumber

There are many people that wonder what it is that they can do in order to properly maintain their drains so that they will drain efficiently. Many people do not realize that the best way for the drains to flow efficiently is to only put waste water down them. Still, there are many people who put all types of liquids down their drains, and this practice could cause a person to require the services of a plumber in order to be able to get their drains working again. Preventative drain maintenance is the best way to ensure that a home’s drains will work correctly for many years.

First, many people think that it is perfectly acceptable to pour liquified animal fat from cooking into their drains, this is simply not the case. Once the animal fat cools it solidifies and can create a major obstruction in the drain pipe. It is best to pour fat drippings into a can, or other disposable container, and dispose of it in a garbage bag along with other garbage. Some people think that it is okay to pour fat down the drain as long as they run hot water at the same time. Although this may help to cut down on the amount of fat that adheres to the walls of the pipes eventually the drain pipe will clog with the fat.

Second, there are a surprising number of people that wash their dishes without a drain screen. A drain screen is meant to allow water to flow through it and down the drain while trapping all of the solid particulates so that they can be disposed of. These people typically are of the thinking that “out of sight, out of mind”. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Organic materials, such as food particles, can accumulate in a drain pipe and cause it to become plugged. The best way to avoid a clogged drain in the kitchen is by only allowing water to go down it.

As one can quickly see the primary way to keep a house’s drains working their very best is to practice proper disposal methods for food waste. Are you dealing with clogged drains in your Brooklyn home? Call Petri Plumbing at 718-748-1254 and schedule a service call today!
