5 Tips to Keep Your Drains Clog-Free

Clogged drain cleared by person with plunger

It’s something we all experience from time to time, but that doesn’t mean that clogged drains get any more pleasant to deal with.

Your Brooklyn plumbers at Petri Plumbing & Heating often preach that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and keeping your drains clear to begin with fits this adage to a “t.”

Keep reading for some tips to help you keep your drains running freely and save you from needing costly repairs. Of course, if you already need drain cleaning services or have any questions, you can always give us a call!

Tip #1: Invest in Some Drain Guards

These little miracles are your pipes’ first line of defense. They catch everything from hair to food particles and can be bought in a variety of shapes, materials and sizes. They are also inexpensive and easy to find at most home improvement or hardware stores.

Tip #2: Flush Your Kitchen Drain with Hot Water Regularly

Even if you use a dishwashing liquid that cuts grease when washing your pots and pans, little globs of the gooey stuff still go down the drain and coat the inside of your pipes. You can keep drains grease-free by squirting some of that dish soap down the pipe, letting it sit for 20 to 30 seconds and then rinsing it out with steaming hot water.

Tip #3: Keep Grease Out of Your Drain

To minimize the amount of grease that enters your sink during wash-ups, it’s best to pour out cooking grease into an old heat-safe cup or the garbage or wipe it out with a paper towel before washing it.

Tip #4: Limit the Kinds of Scrubs & Debris You Flush Down the Sink

Skincare routines are great for your flesh but can be harmful to your sinks. If you use exfoliants with rough grounds, like those that use coffee grounds, or bath bombs, be sure to use a drain guard and flush your drains well.

Tip #5: Use Sink-Safe Cultures to Help Break Down Waste

Chemical laden clog removers can cause your pipes to corrode, which further damages them. Using a biodegradable cleaner is better for frequent use.
