What To Do In The Event Of A Plumbing Emergency
Are you prepared for a plumbing emergency?
Unfortunately, plumbing emergencies do arise from time to time. There are certain things that need to be done in the event of a plumbing emergency.
First, during a plumbing emergency such as leaking pipes or possibly broken water heater call a plumber immediately. If the plumbing emergency arises on the weekend then you need to call a 24-hour emergency service plumber.
If broken pipes are leaking it is important to move any furniture or clothing that may be in direct contact with the gushing water. Furniture, carpeting, and clothing can be easily ruined when water leaks occur. If possible place a large pot or trash can near water leak. Large containers may contain some of the leaking water causing less damage to belongings.
If the plumbing emergency involves leaking water close to wires or electrical box it is critical to shutting off the power. If water comes in contact with electrical wires you could be in for a disastrous result. It may be wise to place towels or blankets on the floor. Placing towels on the floor will help to absorb some of the water which could prevent further damage.
Make sure to remove any photographs or keepsakes far away from any water leaks. Photos many times are not replaceable. If you have done everything you could to help the situation and water damage still occurs it may be time to call your homeowner’s insurance company. Water damage is a common claim that is commonly reported to the insurance company.
Once a plumber arrives the situation may be assessed and hopefully, a resolution may quickly follow. External plumbing problems can also be severe. If a water pipe outside the home breaks it may be wise not to run any water or flush the toilet. If the situation is extreme you may make arrangements to spend the night with a close family member or friend.
