Whether your Brooklyn home is heated by a furnace or a boiler, sometimes a room or two is colder than others. The reasons are usually easy to figure out with a little bit of detective work. Your Brooklyn heating experts at Petri Plumbing & Heating can help you stay warm and toasty.
If you have a furnace, warm air is blown through the ducts by the furnace fan and comes out through registers in each room. A boiler moves warm water through pipes that heat radiators. Whichever type of heating equipment you have, something is keeping the heat from getting to the room.
Let’s begin with the easiest things to check. If you have a furnace, are the registers open? Someone may have closed the registers previously because the room was too hot or the air conditioning was too cold. Make sure you look for all of the registers in the room. Is there furniture on top of one or more of them? Are there drapes blocking a register? Depending on where the register is located, sometimes the warm air goes up inside the drapes and never gets into the room. If you have a boiler, are the radiators warm? If not, are the radiator valves open? If the radiators are working, is the heat blocked from getting into the room by furniture or drapes?
Now that you’ve checked the obvious, it may be time to go down in the basement to see if you can spot a problem with the duct or your pipes. This is where you’re probably better off calling the experts at Petri Plumbing & Heating. We can look up at the ceiling in your basement and immediately figure out which pipes and ducts are going to each room upstairs. Perhaps there’s a damper closed in one of your ducts or a valve closed in your heating pipes. Call us rather than messing with it yourself!
Ductwork may have gotten damaged and could be leaking or bent and obstructed. Ductwork that was installed for a new addition may be the wrong dimensions or too far away from the furnace fan. We’ll inspect your ducts and make sure they are sealed so warm air goes to the right places.
Sometimes a problem with the building can make a room cold. The insulation in the wall may have degraded or cold air is leaking in through an old window. If there’s a fireplace in a cold room, check that the damper is closed.
